CAN THE TEN COMMANDMENTS BE KEPT PERFECTLY?
One of the biggest disputes today amongst many Christians is whether the Ten Commandments of God can be kept perfectly by man or not? Many Christians believe that man can’t keep the Ten Commandments of God perfectly.
1. But what does the Scripture say?
In the book of Exodus chapter 20, the Bible records the Ten Commandments as given and written by God’s own hand.
If the Ten Commandments cannot be kept perfectly by man, then why did God give it to man in the first place and asked him to keep it holy? Did God make a mistake? Did God not know what He was doing?
Why should God say, “Thou shalt have no other gods before me,” if He knew that man is not able keep it?
Why should God destroy three thousand people who worshipped the golden calf at the foot of Mt. Sinai after their exodus from Egypt, if He knew that they cannot keep it perfectly? – [Exodus 32:28].
Would God be justified in His action of killing them if man is not expected to keep the Ten Commandments perfectly? Not so!
Was God insane when He asked man to keep the law of God holy, if He knew that man cannot keep it perfectly? I bet He would be!
2. Did Jesus expect us to keep the Ten Commandments perfectly? Absolutely!
In John 14:15, Jesus says, “If ye love Me keep My Commandments.”
Jesus knew that man can keep the Ten Commandments of God without a shadow of doubt, otherwise He would not have said what He said in John 14:15 above.
3. What did Jesus say regarding those who keep His Father’s commandments?
In John 14:21 Jesus said,“He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.”
Jesus said that those who love God will keep His commandments. So if one says that the Ten Commandments of God cannot be kept perfectly, hence, that person is reflecting the opposite of the truth, then, who do you think he is representing? It has to be none else but the devil himself.
4. What does the Scripture call the professed Christian who keepth not the commandments of God?
1 John 2:3 - And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
1 John 2:4 - He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
Again, if the Bible calls the one who claims to know God but keepth not the commandments of God a liar, apparently those who say that the commandments of God cannot be kept perfectly by man are liars too and there is not truth in them.
5. Does God really mean that man can keep ALL of the Ten Commandments?
James 2:10 says -  “For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.”
The Bible says that if one fails to keep one precept of the Ten Commandments, then that person is guilty of breaking all of the Ten Commandments.
Since God is all powerful and all knowing, hence, He knows what He is doing and that the Ten Commandments can be kept perfectly by man. He has already made provision for man that he could keep ALL of the Ten Commandments holy by His divine power. Therefore, there is no excuse that man cannot keep the Ten Commandments of God perfectly.
It is so sad that many Christians believe that God is able to do anything, yet lacked the faith to believe that God can help them keep ALL of the Ten Commandments according to His will. What an irony.
Many Christians believe that God can help them in all their physical needs and they prayed for His power. They talk of His power in healing them, in answering their prayers. But when it comes to believing in God delivering them from breaking any of His Ten Commandments, they contradict themselves by saying, “man cannot keep ALL of the Ten Commandments of God perfectly.” What a shame.
Are you one of those that don’t believe that God can help you overcome the sin of saying, “Man cannot keep the Ten Commandments of God perfectly?”
May God give you the spirit of confession as in 1 John 1:9 which says, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from ALL unrighteousness.”
